Before you redesign your website, answer these five questions.

A redesign is expensive and slow. Make sure it’s solving the right problem before the first wireframe.

Redesigns often start with a feeling: the site looks dated, the competition looks better, the CEO saw something they liked. Sometimes a redesign is exactly right. Often, the real problem sits somewhere else.

The five questions

  1. What are we trying to change, and how will we know?
  2. Who is the site really for, and what do they need to do?
  3. Where do people drop out today, and why?
  4. What would simpler look like?
  5. What will we keep improving after launch?

Answering these honestly might confirm the redesign. It might also point to a smaller, faster fix that delivers more.
